Our photographer Matt McDonald captured a ton of skimboarding photos over the course 2015 and we made him try and narrow down all the photos to his personal top 10 favorites. He struggled with it and it was not an easy task. There are 10 banger skimboard action photos below though. You can see each of his favorite skimboard captures and a learn bit about each place, the rider and what went in to capturing the photo.

Lexi Hutchings in San Diego
Richard Docter and I made the trip down to San Diego to meet up with team rider Lexi Hutchings. Although it was a high-tide we managed to find a place to skim at Ocean Beach. Lexi skimmed real hard for about an hour and and we stacked a ton of clips and photos. I used a Canon 7D Mark II and a 24-70mm f2.8 lens for this photo.

Adam Balaam at Chambers Creek
Adam Balaam killed it everywhere we went last summer and a session at Chambers Creek in Tacoma, Washington was no different. We brought this quarter pipe down to Chambers and Adam destroyed this feature. For this photo I used a Nikon D7100 with a 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye.

Isaac Thomas in Seattle
Since I have moved to Seattle Alki Beach is the closest skim spot to where I live in Capitol Hill. The tide window for skim is very small and one day this summer Isaac Thomas and I decided to take advantage of it. Isaac drove down from Tacoma and we captured a bunch of video and this photo with the Seattle skyline in the background while Isaac was sporting a Seahawks jersey. For this photo I used a Canon 5D Mark II and a 14mm f2.8 lens.

Casey Gackle at the Bellingham Skim Jam
The Bellingham Skim Jam was a lot of fun last spring and the attendance was great for a gloomy Pacific Northwest day. Casey put on a show that day hitting all the features and popping higher than everyone else. This was one of my favorite photos of him I captured using a Nikon D7100 and a 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye lens. You can watch the Bellingham Skim Jam video I put together by CLICKING HERE.

Adam Balaam at Baker Beach
To the surprise of no one here's another photo of Adam Balaam. This was from a road trip I made down to San Francisco to film with Adam for the release of the 2015 Sacramento Pro and you can watch that video by CLICKING HERE. This photos was also the cover of the 2015 Flatland Magazine Photo Annual. For this photo I used my Canon 7D Mark II and a 14mm f2.8 lens. I was real close to Adam for this shot and the board ended up hitting me in the leg after the photo. It was totally worth it.

Adrien Raza at the DB Pro/AM
I captured a ton of photos of the 2015 DB Pro/AM at Dash Point, but this photo of Adrien Raza was my favorite. This was one frame of Adrien throwing a 3 shuv on the main feature in the finals. You can watch the full video from the 2015 DB Pro/AM by CLICKING HERE. For this photo I used a Nikon D7100 with a 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye mounted to a monopod with a flash on top. I held the monopod in the air and used a remote trigger to fire the camera.

Richard Docter in Cannon Beach
We ventured down to Cannon Beach, Oregon for a company retreat in February. I really wanted to get at least one photo of someone skimboarding in front of Haystack Rock and Richard was the only one brave enough to skim in the frigid water. For this photo I used the Canon 7D Mark II with a 70-200mm lens.

Adrien Raza Attempts the St. George Waterfall
If the water levels in the Virgin River were lower I really think Adrien Raza would have landed this. It was so deep at that part of the river I don't think anyone could have, but Adrien still tried and sent it off the waterfall several times. I captured this photo using a Canon 7D Mark II and a 74-70mm f2.8 lens and you will be able to see more from this session in the DB Skimboards videos I am working on this winter.

Isaac Thomas at Spanish Banks
I love Spanish Banks in Vancouver, British Columbia. It's probably my second favorite skim spot after Bellingham Bay. We rolled to Vancouver in the DB van for the Spanish Banks Skim Jam and Isaac was killing it all day long and I have a ton of video from the skim jam I am still sorting through. This photo was my favorite due to the cityscape in the background showing one of the breathtaking views you get to see during a skim session at that spot. For this photo I used a Canon 7D Mark II and a 70-200mm at 200mm to get a compression effect to make the city seem even larger in the background.

Adam Balaam Lands the Virgin River Waterfall
The gnarliest landing I have ever seen and quite possibly the gnarliest thing I have ever seen on a skimboard: Adam Balaam landing the St. George waterfall. Adam took a beating on the previous attempts since the landing pretty much is just a giant rock with a little bit of sand on it. For this photo I used a Nikon D7100 and a 10.5mm f2.8 fisheye and you will be able to watch the video of this gnarly skimboarding event in the spring in a upcoming video series.
